The Steward

Cellarer

HouseholdWorks on its own, within what you allow

Your photos, videos and documents backed up, and checked that they restore.

Backs up the folders you choose to a drive or folder you pick, copying only what changed, as plain copies you can open and copy back. It never deletes anything in the backup, and now and then restores a few files to check they come back as they were.

The steward ran the household and its servants, and saw that nothing laid by was lost.

The Steward has two hires. With Workshop, Steward takes the office and Cellarer keeps working behind it.

What's new

Every release

0.1.0

The Cellarer joins the household: your photos, videos and documents backed up, and checked that they restore.

What's new

  • Backs up Documents, Pictures, Videos and Desktop (and Music, or any other folder you choose) to an external drive, another drive, a network folder or a cloud folder already on your PC. No account needed.
  • Copies only what's new or changed, every hour or when you press Back up now, as plain copies you can open with File Explorer.
  • Never deletes anything in the backup: a file you delete stays in it, and a changed file's older copy is kept under Earlier versions.
  • Every week it restores a few files from the backup and checks they match what was backed up.
  • Says plainly what isn't covered yet: a drive that's unplugged (it backs up when it's back), a full drive, a file in use, a folder you haven't chosen, a backup on the same drive as your files.
  • Leaves OneDrive's online-only files in the cloud, so a backup never downloads them.

Before you update

  • Nothing: choose where to back up to when you hire it, and it starts.

Installing

  • Castellan installs and updates it by itself. To install it by hand, unpack the zip anywhere and run node src\cli.ts install (Node 22.18 or later). SHA256SUMS.txt lists its SHA-256 (PowerShell: Get-FileHash).
