Licence terms (EULA)
Effective October 7, 2026
In plain words. You subscribe, and while you do, you get every new version of the agents your plan covers, on up to 3 PCs. Stop paying and keep what you have: everything installed keeps working, for good, and you can reinstall any version released while you paid. Don't share your licence, resell the software, or take it apart. The agents act on your PC only within what you allow, and you keep your own backups.
1. The agreement
These terms are an agreement between you and Jeremy Collier (“we”) for Castellan: the Castellan app, its agents, their updates, and the Exchequer service that licenses and delivers them (together, “the Software”). By installing, starting a trial, or subscribing, you accept them. If you accept for a company, you confirm you may bind it.
2. Plans and the subscription
- Household covers the household agents; Workshop covers those and the developer agents. The agents page lists which agent is in which plan.
- A subscription is paid monthly or yearly in advance through Stripe, and renews until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from the customer portal; it then ends at the end of the period already paid.
- Your paid time is the time up to the end of the last period you paid for.
- The Castellan app itself and Heiward are free; a subscription is for the agents.
3. Your licence: the Freehold licence
Subject to these terms, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use the Software:
- On up to 3 PCs per licence, each one used by you (or, for a company, by one person at a time). A PC gives its place back from Castellan's Settings, and another can take it. Giving another PC's place away is limited to 3 times in 30 days.
- While you subscribe, you may download and use every release, published during your paid time, of the agents your plan covers.
- Every version you paid for is yours to keep. Your licence to each release published during your paid time is perpetual: it does not end when the subscription does. Everything installed keeps working, and you may download those releases again, on any of your PCs, at any time.
- Releases published after your paid time ended are not covered until you subscribe again; then you may download the newest at once.
- Moving from Workshop to Household keeps your licence to the Workshop releases published before the move.
4. The trial
One 7-day trial of Workshop per PC, with no payment. The trial's licence is not perpetual: when it ends, the agents it covered stop working, with their settings and data kept, until a licence covers them again.
5. What you may not do
- Share, publish, sell or lend your licence key, or use one licence on more PCs than it allows.
- Copy, redistribute, rent or resell the Software, or a release downloaded with your licence.
- Reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it, or get round its licence checks, except where the law allows this despite this term.
- Use the Exchequer in a way that harms it or other customers, such as automated key guessing.
6. Agents that act on your PC
Some agents change things on your PC: they move or rename files (Warrener), install app updates (Thatcher), close programs (Shepherd, Pinder), roll back graphics drivers (Lamplighter), work in your code repositories (Reeve, the Steward), or send files to the Recycle Bin (Heiward). Each does so only within what you allow in its settings, and most wait for your tick. You choose what to allow, and you remain responsible for keeping backups of your files and repositories.
7. Other software and models
The Software downloads and uses software and AI models made by others (for example Node.js, llama.cpp, NPU runtimes and models from Hugging Face), each under its own licence, which you accept by using it. Heiward is open source under the GNU AGPL v3. Parts shared by every agent are under the MIT licence. The notices come with each release.
8. AI output
The agents' AI can be wrong. Summaries, names, captions, suggestions and answers are suggestions: check them before you rely on them.
9. Updates and changes
We may change the Software, add or retire agents, and change prices for future periods (never for a period you have already paid). A price change for your subscription is announced before it applies, and you may cancel before it does.
10. Refunds
The trial lets you try everything before you pay. If something goes wrong with a payment, write to support@castellan-software.com. Where the law of your country gives you a right to a refund or to withdraw, these terms don't take it away.
11. Ending the agreement
You may stop using the Software at any time. If you break section 5, we may end your licence, including the perpetual part, after telling you why. Sections 5, 7, 8, 12 and 13 survive the end of the agreement.
12. Warranty and liability
The Software is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for lost data, profits or business. Our total liability is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing here limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited, or your rights as a consumer.
13. Law
These terms are governed by the law of the State of Georgia, United States, whose courts hear any dispute, unless the law of the country you live in gives you the right to use its courts or its law.
14. Contact
Jeremy Collier, at support@castellan-software.com. Notices under these terms are given by email: yours to that address, and ours to the email your licence is under. How we handle your data is in the privacy notice.
