Lamplighter: release notes

Each version, newest first.

0.4.9

It carries the Steward's kit 2.36.1: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.36.1: GenieX 0.8.0 is the NPU's server on a Snapdragon.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual. This kit comes after 2.36.0; 2.33.0 (Steward 0.19.4) is still to be released and doesn't depend on it.

0.4.8

It carries the Steward's kit 2.35.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.35.0: A release of an agent Castellan sells goes to the Exchequer, and no longer to the public releases repository.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual. Agents for sale stop appearing in the public releases repository once the Exchequer 0.6.0 is deployed with its migration applied. Until then, releases go there as before.

0.4.7

It carries the Steward's kit 2.34.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.34.0: An agent's rounds never stop silently.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual. This kit comes after 2.33.0 (Steward 0.19.4); if 2.33.0 isn't released yet, release it first.

0.4.6

It carries the Steward's kit 2.32.1: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.32.1: The kit names the app the person bought: Castellan.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.4.5

It carries the Steward's kit 2.32.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.32.0: A release goes to the agent's own repository, and to a releases repository only where one is named.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.4.4

It carries the Steward's kit 2.31.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.31.0: Local AI on every Copilot+ NPU, installed by setup: Qualcomm Snapdragon, Intel Core Ultra and AMD Ryzen AI.

Before you update

  • The accelerators move from Reeve's config.json to %USERPROFILE%\.manor\accelerators\config.json the first time the Smith (or Reeve's keeper) reads them after updating: a copy, word for word, and Reeve's file is left as it was. Nothing to do.
  • On a PC whose NPU isn't set up yet, the Smith's or Manor's Set up now offers its maker's server and models (several GB) and asks first.

0.4.3

It carries the Steward's kit 2.30.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.30.0: A release is published to the Exchequer, Castellan's release service, as well as to GitHub.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.4.2

It carries the Steward's kit 2.29.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.29.0: Every agent's page fits a phone: the title bar's action and wide tables no longer push the page sideways.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.4.1

After an update, one button brings the guard up to date: no command to run.

What's new

  • Update the guard. The guard runs as SYSTEM from its own copy, so after the Lamplighter updates it goes on running the version before. The page now notices (it compares the guard's scripts with this release's when it starts and each time it looks) and shows The guard needs updating to this version, with an Update the guard button. Windows asks for an administrator once; each script is checked against the release's checksums before it is copied, and the drivers the guard keeps stay. Until then the old guard keeps watching.
  • The same notice is offered to Manor and the other agents as something that needs you (needsYou in the Lamplighter's state and ping).

What changed

  • Nothing the Lamplighter shows asks you to type a command any more: the page's hint about a dry run is gone, the guard's scheduled task and its messages name the page's buttons, and a graphics card the guard had to turn off is turned back on in Device Manager, or by turning the guard off on the page.
  • The guard never takes new scripts from the Lamplighter's own folder by itself: updating it always goes through the administrator prompt you approve.

Before you update

  • If the guard is on, the page shows Update the guard after this update; press it when it suits you (Windows asks for an administrator once). Until then the guard you have keeps working as before.

0.4.0

A safer guard: it rolls back only with a checked backup, never on a question nobody saw, and is removed with the Lamplighter.

What's new

  • Turn the guard off from the command line: lamplighter guard off (one administrator prompt). It also turns back on any graphics card the guard disabled, and offers again in Windows Update any driver update it hid.
  • Keep from the keyboard: the confirm window shows a three-digit code; typing it and pressing Enter keeps the driver, as a click on Keep does.

What changed

  • No rollback without a checked backup. When nobody keeps a new driver, or the PC starts twice without a Keep, the Lamplighter removes it only after it has checked its copy of the last good driver (every file and the signature). Without one, it leaves the new driver in place and tells you. A screen that looks dark is still rescued without one.
  • No answer from nobody. The time to click Keep starts only when the window has actually shown on your unlocked screen. When Windows signs you in by itself after an update and the screen stays locked, that's no answer yet: the window waits for you to unlock. When nobody answers but the screen was working, the driver stays on trial and you're asked again at your next sign-in; it's rolled back only on a sign of a dark screen.
  • No forced restart while you're signed in. When a rollback needs a restart, you get a notification asking you to restart; the Lamplighter restarts by itself only when nobody is signed in, or when the screen looked dark.
  • Uninstalling refuses while the guard is on. lamplighter uninstall now stops and says to turn the guard off first (lamplighter guard off), or use lamplighter uninstall --guard-off to do both. Before, the guard went on running alone.
  • It never removes a driver package another graphics card also uses, and only ever removes a driver package by its published name.
  • A PC that always has a Microsoft Basic Display adapter running no longer reads it as a dark screen: only one that appears after a driver change counts.
  • Sign-ins and Windows Update's restarts are told apart by account (SID), so it works the same in every Windows language.
  • Turning the guard on checks every script against the list of checksums its release carries, and refuses if one differs.
  • The confirm window's first words gave 120 seconds whatever the setting; they now give the real time left.

Before you update

  • The guard now only rolls back with a verified backup, and asks again instead of acting when nobody saw the question. A new driver nobody keeps on a working screen stays on trial until someone keeps it, or for 3 quiet days.
  • If the guard is on, turn it on again after updating (Turn on the guard on the page, or lamplighter guard on), so the guard that runs as SYSTEM gets these changes; until then the old guard keeps running. Windows asks for an administrator once.

0.3.2

It names no folders of one particular PC.

What changed

  • Its entry for Manor (manor-agent.json) no longer names a Node in a folder only one PC has: it runs on Manor's own Node, or one installed in the usual place.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.3.1

A security fix: a folder name with curly quotes in it can no longer break out of the guard's PowerShell command.

What changed

  • Windows PowerShell treats the curly quotes ‘ ’ ‚ ‛ as quote marks. Turning the guard on or off (which runs as an administrator) and reading your profile now escape every one of them, so a folder like O’Brien stays a name and is never read as a command.
  • It carries the Steward's kit 2.28.1, which brings the same fix to everything else Lamplighter hands to PowerShell.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.2.2

It carries the Steward's kit 2.28.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.28.0: Required settings: an agent that can't work without something from you waits for it, and onboarding asks for it.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.2.1

It carries the Steward's kit 2.27.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.27.0: An accelerator's name is what the PC calls it, never a setting.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.2.0

A shorter Settings page, and a tour for new hires.

What's new

  • A tour. When Manor hires the Lamplighter it offers its tour: what it does, the guard's two times and the explanation, then its page. Open it again any time at #/tour.
  • The manor's page frame. The title bar, on and off duty, the theme and Back to Manor are the same as on every agent's page, and Run now is in the title bar.

What changed

  • Settings is short. It shows the time to click Keep, how long a dark screen lasts before a rollback, and the explanation. How often the page reads the guard is under Advanced, and is now the manor's usual round interval. Your old value is kept.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual. The guard itself isn't touched, and keeps its own settings until you turn it on again.

0.1.26

It carries the Steward's kit 2.26.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.1.18

The Lamplighter shares the drivers it reads, and shows when the Herald has a newer one.

What's new

  • The graphics cards' drivers, as the Lamplighter last read them, and the last driver change it saw, are published for the other agents: the Auditor and the Herald now take the drivers from here instead of reading them again.
  • When the Herald knows of a newer NVIDIA driver than the one installed, the Graphics cards card says so, with its version and date. Nothing shows when the Herald isn't there.
