Smith: release notes

Each version, newest first.

0.7.1

Try it says what it does: a new NPU server or model that works and is as fast is used straight away.

What changed

  • The words beside Try it, and its question before it starts, said nothing would change until you chose Use it. Since 0.6.0 a try that answers right and at least as fast as what your NPU runs now is used at once, and a slower one waits for you. They say so now.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.7.0

The Smith's page is easier to read at a glance.

What changed

  • The top says how things stand: when it last looked, how many servers are up, and how many accelerators it keeps, as a few plain figures under what the Smith does.
  • Each accelerator has a card of its own: its name and kind (NPU, graphics card, processor), the Auditor's check, a green, amber or grey dot for each of its servers, and a small meter for its slots in use and who is waiting. A failure or a game on it is called out in its own line. Switch off sits at the card's corner.
  • What it did is a list, newest first, with "2 days ago" beside each line (hover for the date and time) instead of raw timestamps. The newest six show; Show all opens the rest.
  • New for your NPU is tidier: Look now and Stop looking sit beside the heading; the things to try are one list with Try it and Not now beside each, and the "it installs beside what works" note is said once. A finished try keeps its lines folded under What it did; one being tried, or one that failed, shows them open. The timings table lines up its numbers.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.6.1

It carries the Steward's kit 2.36.1: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.36.1: GenieX 0.8.0 is the NPU's server on a Snapdragon.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual. This kit comes after 2.36.0; 2.33.0 (Steward 0.19.4) is still to be released and doesn't depend on it.

0.6.0

A newer NPU server or model that works and answers at least as fast is used at once; a slower one waits for you.

What changed

  • Try it now switches for you when it pays. If what you tried answers the test questions and writes at least as fast as what your NPU ran before, the Smith starts using it straight away and says how they compare ("GenieX 0.9.0 answers 18% faster than GenieX 0.8.0"). Use it is no longer needed.
  • A slower one waits for you. If it works but answers slower, what you had stays in use, and the Smith shows both side by side: Use it anyway or Keep what I have. A newer server that installs over the old one is taken out again at once, so the old one keeps running; Use it anyway installs it again.

What's new

  • Settings, NPU setup (under Advanced): choose the one you had before the last try to go back to it, and to be asked before any switch from now on. The newest that works here is the default.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.5.1

It carries the Steward's kit 2.35.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.35.0: A release of an agent Castellan sells goes to the Exchequer, and no longer to the public releases repository.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual. Agents for sale stop appearing in the public releases repository once the Exchequer 0.6.0 is deployed with its migration applied. Until then, releases go there as before.

0.5.0

The Smith times your NPU: each setup it has run, side by side, so you keep the one that serves you best.

What's new

  • How your NPU has performed, on the Smith's page under New for your NPU: every setup your NPU has run on this PC, with how long it takes to write a short paragraph, how many tokens a second it writes, how long its first answer takes (loading the model) and how long a question about a picture takes. Each is asked the same questions, while nothing else uses the NPU.
  • Every try is timed. Before a try, the Smith times what your NPU runs now; once the new server or model answers, it times that the same way, and says how they compare ("18% faster than GenieX 0.7.0"). If the older one served you better, Remove it puts it back.
  • Time it now times what your NPU runs today, whenever you like: after a driver update, say.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual. The first try after it, or Time it now, starts the history.

0.4.1

What changed

  • Trying a newer server that installs over the one you have (GenieX on a Snapdragon) said "about 1 MB to download": it now gives the installer's real size.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.4.0

The Smith looks for what's new for your NPU, and helps you try it: installed beside what works, tested, and taken out again if it doesn't work.

What's new

  • New for your NPU, a section of the Smith's page. Once a day the Smith looks at your NPU maker's own releases for a newer version of its model server, and at their own model collection for other models built for your NPU that fit your PC's memory. It shows each one with its size and where it comes from, and Castellan's Needs you says when there's something to try.
  • An NPU Castellan doesn't support yet gets something to try. If your NPU's maker has a model server (AMD's Ryzen 7040 and 8040, say), the Smith offers it as an experiment.
  • Try it downloads it, installs it beside what you use now, and asks it the same test questions setup asks. If it answers, Use it switches your NPU to it, and Remove it puts back what you had, then or later. If it doesn't answer, everything it added is taken out again and what you had is as it was. You're told what happened at each step.
  • Not now hides one for good. Stop looking turns the daily look off.

What changed

  • A server update that comes as an installer replaces the server in place, so the Smith keeps a copy of the one you had and puts it back if the new one fails or you remove it.
  • While a new model is tested, the server in use pauses; the next request starts it again.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual. Nothing is downloaded until you press Try it.

0.3.3

It carries the Steward's kit 2.34.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.34.0: An agent's rounds never stop silently.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual. This kit comes after 2.33.0 (Steward 0.19.4); if 2.33.0 isn't released yet, release it first.

0.3.2

It carries the Steward's kit 2.32.1: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.32.1: The kit names the app the person bought: Castellan.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.3.1

The Auditor checks the models after an update.

What's new

  • After Set up installs or updates a model server or a model (the NPU's server, llama.cpp for a graphics card, the models), the Smith asks the Auditor to check that the models still answer right. The setup you asked for is the go-ahead, so the check starts at once. This needs the Auditor installed and on duty. Without it the setup works as before; if the Auditor is installed but off duty or not answering, a quiet line under the setup says the check wasn't asked for.
  • The model servers list shows each accelerator's last check beside it: "checked: answers right", "a check is due", or "answered wrong: see the Auditor's page" with a link to it. Only shown when the Auditor is installed.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.3.0

What's new

  • Set up offers the NPU first, whatever its maker: GenieX on a Snapdragon, OpenVINO Model Server on an Intel Core Ultra, FastFlowLM on an AMD Ryzen AI 300 and later. It downloads the server and its models (it says how much and asks first), checks them against pinned checksums, installs them for you without an administrator, and uses the NPU only once it has answered a test question.
  • This PC names the NPU's maker and generation, and says plainly when the manor can't use it (AMD's Ryzen 7040 and 8040, or a driver that is too old), so its work goes to the graphics card or the processor.

What changed

  • On a PC with no model setup yet, the Smith no longer writes a GenieX entry unless GenieX is actually installed; it says that Set up will install the NPU's server instead.
  • The model setup moves to %USERPROFILE%\.manor\accelerators\config.json, a folder Manor owns, so the household agents work without Reeve. It is copied from Reeve's file the first time it is read; Reeve's file is left as it was.
  • A leftover model server is stopped only when the manor started it or it is in the manor's own folders, never because of the port it uses.
  • The Steward's kit 2.32.0: a manor whose settings give it no name is called Castellan, the product's name, on the title bar's "Back to" link.

Before you update

  • Nothing to do: your model setup is copied over, word for word, the first time the Smith looks after the update. The Steward's kit 2.32.0 must be released first.

0.2.6

It carries the Steward's kit 2.30.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.30.0: A release is published to the Exchequer, Castellan's release service, as well as to GitHub.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.2.5

It carries the Steward's kit 2.29.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.29.0: Every agent's page fits a phone: the title bar's action and wide tables no longer push the page sideways.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.2.4

It names no folders of one particular PC.

What changed

  • Its entry for Manor (manor-agent.json) no longer names a Node in a folder only one PC has: it runs on Manor's own Node, or one installed in the usual place.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.2.3

It carries the Steward's kit 2.28.1: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.28.1: Security fix: a value with curly quotes in it could break out of a PowerShell string.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.2.2

It carries the Steward's kit 2.28.0: the parts every agent of the manor shares.

What changed

  • The Steward's kit 2.28.0: Required settings: an agent that can't work without something from you waits for it, and onboarding asks for it.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual.

0.2.1

An accelerator is called what your PC calls it: its name is no longer a setting. It carries the Steward's kit 2.27.0.

What changed

  • Settings → Accelerators no longer offers a name to edit. Each accelerator is listed read-only above the list by the name this PC gives it, its model alone, as Manor shows it: "Qualcomm Hexagon", "Qualcomm Adreno X2-90", "Qualcomm Oryon". The list itself has no name, and a name typed into it is dropped when you save.
  • The Steward's kit 2.27.0: an accelerator's name is what the PC calls it, never a setting.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual. A name kept in config.json from before is ignored, and taken out the next time the accelerators are saved.

0.2.0

The manor's page frame, and a tour for new hires.

What's new

  • A tour. When Manor hires the Smith it offers its tour: what it does and how long each accelerator's servers may sit unused, then its page. Open it again any time at #/tour.
  • The manor's page frame. The title bar, on and off duty, the theme and Back to Manor are the same as on every agent's page, and Run now is in the title bar.

What changed

  • The accelerators, This PC and Set up are folded under Set up the accelerators, below the servers. Settings holds only the idle times.

Before you update

  • Nothing: it updates itself as usual. config.json and the servers aren't touched.

0.1.16
