How Castellan finds updates#
Castellan looks for new releases of itself and of each agent every hour, and keeps what it found, so the page shows it at once even after a restart. Check now, under Updates on Castellan's page, looks straight away.
What's out shows in three places:
- Updates, near the top of the page: everything that's out, with Update all.
- Each role's card: Version 0.6.4 is out, with What's new (that release's notes) and Update beside Open.
- A new Castellan shows as a banner across the top of the page.
Every release's notes are on this site too, in the release notes.
Install an update#
Choose Update on an agent's card, or Update all. Then:
- Castellan backs up every agent's settings first. See Backups.
- It downloads each release and checks it against its checksum.
- Each agent's own installer stops its page, installs the new release, and starts it again. It keeps its data, its settings and its duty: an agent that was off duty stays off duty.
One update runs at a time, and Updates shows its log as it goes. You can close the page: the update carries on without it.
When Castellan updates itself
Updating Castellan restarts its page. While it does, the page says Installing an update over the whole window, with the versions and the latest step, and loads the new page by itself when it's back, usually within a minute.
Automatic updates#
Automatic updates are off until you switch them on, for Castellan and for each agent separately:
- Settings > Automatic updates: a card for Castellan and each agent, with what's out and what an update waits for, and All on and All off.
- Each role's card: Update automatically.
- Under Updates: Update Manor automatically, for Castellan itself.
An agent switched on updates by itself once a release is out and it's idle: not working, not starting or stopping, and not holding or waiting for the NPU or a graphics card. Until then, its card says what it's waiting for. So an automatic update never cuts a job short.
When an update fails#
An update has failed only if the agent is still the version it was before. Then:
- An automatic update is tried again after 30 minutes, up to three times for that release. After the third, it waits for you: Update on the card tries again and starts the count afresh.
- Nothing is left half-installed. The old version keeps working until the new one is in.
- Updates shows the failed update's log: what step it stopped at, and why.
An update can't be undone with a button yet. If a new version misbehaves, restore the backup made just before the update (Backups keeps the ones from before each update), or write to us: see Support.
Updates and your license#
With a subscription, every release comes as it's published. If a subscription has lapsed, releases published after it lapsed wait, and the card says so ("0.5.2 is out. Your updates paused on 27 September 2026: subscribe again to get it."); they're never offered until you subscribe again. Everything installed keeps working. See Your license, the trial and your PCs.
