Set up a backup#
- Choose a place on another drive than your files: an external drive is best. A cloud folder already on this PC, such as OneDrive, works too.
- Open the Cellarer's page: Open on its card in Castellan. Its tour asks where to back up to and what. Or open Settings.
- Set Back up to to a folder in that place:
E:\Backups, say. A folder that isn't there yet is made. - Under What to back up, tick the folders to keep. Add others under Other folders to back up.
- Press Save, then Back up now.
The first backup copies everything, and may take a while. After that, only what changed.
Get a file back#
The backup is plain copies: you need nothing but File Explorer.
- Press Open the backup on the Cellarer's page, or open the place yourself, then
Cellarer backup, then this PC's name. - Find the file, in the same folders as on your PC.
- Copy it back where you want it.
Get an earlier version back#
- Open the backup, then
Earlier versions. - Each folder is named by when the files in it were replaced. Open the one from before the change you want to undo.
- Copy the file back.
On a new PC#
Plug in the drive, open the backup in File Explorer, and copy the folders back. Then install Castellan, hire the Cellarer, and set Back up to again: the new PC's backup goes under its own name.
