Turn on the guard#
- Open the Lamplighter's page: Open on its card in Castellan.
- Press Turn on the guard (asks for administrator).
- Windows asks whether to let it make changes. Choose Yes.
- The page shows the guard on, and when it last looked.
The guard keeps each graphics card's current driver as its first good one.
Keep a new driver#
After a graphics driver changes, the first time you sign in, a window covers the screen: "New graphics driver: keep it?", with the version, a Keep button and the time left.
- Click Keep. The button is at a random place, so a stray click can't answer it.
- Or type the three-digit code it shows, and press Enter.
A click or key in the first moment is ignored, so typing blind can't answer it. If your screen looks wrong, don't press anything: the guard rolls back when the time runs out.
The window shows only on your own unlocked screen. A PC Windows signed in by itself after an update, with its screen locked, isn't asked until you unlock it.
See it work: a drill#
Run a drill rehearses the whole thing without touching your driver:
- It pretends your graphics card's driver has just changed.
- The window shows, marked DRILL. Click Keep, or let it run out.
- The page shows exactly what the guard would do: keep the driver, or each step of the rollback.
Nothing is installed, removed or restarted.
Update the guard#
After the Lamplighter updates, the guard keeps running the earlier version's scripts until you let it take the new ones: it never takes new scripts by itself. The page says The guard needs updating to this version, and Castellan lists it under what needs you.
Press Update the guard (asks for administrator), and choose Yes.
Turn it off#
Turning the guard off, on its page, stops it, and offers again any driver it hid in Windows Update.
