What the Chronicler does#

The chronicler kept the record of the household's deeds, year by year. The Chronicler keeps the record of your games: the clips your capture app saves, sorted by game, and made smaller when you ask.

It holds the Miller's office on a gamer's PC, and the Miller works behind it: the Miller still grinds whatever you drop in its hopper. On an everyday PC it's the other way round. See Hiring, switching and letting staff go.

The Chronicler comes with the Household license.

Where it finds clips#

Every 30 minutes, in your Videos folder:

Capture appWhere it looks
Xbox Game BarCaptures, wherever Windows keeps it
NVIDIA (the NVIDIA app, or GeForce Experience)A folder for each game
AMD (Radeon ReLive)Radeon ReLive, a folder for each game
OthersFolders you add under Other clip folders: each folder inside is a game

A clip is an MP4, MKV, MOV or WebM file that hasn't changed for five minutes, so one still being recorded is left for later. Its game is its folder's name, or its own name without the date the capture app added. It only lists folders: it reads nothing in your clips until you ask for a copy.

Smaller copies, only when you ask#

Make smaller copies, for one game or for all of them, queues the clips not done yet. They're made one at a time, at low priority, the way the Miller makes its copies: HEVC where the PC can make it, and kept only when the copy is:

  • under 90% of the clip's size;
  • the same length, within half a second;
  • with the same sound tracks.

Copies go to Videos\Game clips\<the game>, under the clip's own name, with its dates.

HDR clips, clips under 10 MB and clips with no picture are left as they are, and the page says why.

Your clips are yours#

The Chronicler never changes or removes a clip by itself. Move original to the Recycle Bin, for one clip or a whole game's, sends the originals whose copies are kept to the Recycle Bin. It refuses a clip on a drive with no Recycle Bin, or bigger than the bin, rather than deleting it for good.

It uses no AI.

Its page#

The Chronicler's page is at http://chronicler.localhost:21515/, and Open on its card in Castellan goes there. It lists your games and their clips, what copies saved, and Look now.

What it can't do#

  • Clips another app keeps elsewhere, such as Steam's own recordings, Medal or Outplayed, aren't found on their own. Add their folder under Other clip folders.
  • Making copies uses the processor or graphics card while it runs. Better not to play meanwhile: Stop, beside the copy being made on its page, ends it.
  • HDR clips are left as they are: a copy would lose the HDR look.
