When the Lamplighter isn't working as it should

The screen is dark after a driver update#

Wait. Once a sign of a dark screen has lasted 45 seconds, the guard rolls back, and restarts Windows with a minute's notice if the rollback needs it. If you see nothing at all, the guard can't tell: restart the PC (hold the power button if you must), twice if needed. Two start-ups without a Keep roll the driver back.

The guard must be on for this. If it wasn't, start Windows in Safe Mode and roll the driver back in Device Manager.

A driver that worked was rolled back#

Nobody pressed Keep, and the guard couldn't tell the screen works. Reinstall the driver; it goes on trial again, and press Keep at the next sign-in. If it came from Windows Update, turning the guard off and on offers it again.

A driver rolled back twice is left in place the third time, with a warning.

The Keep window didn't show#

  • The guard isn't on, or needs updating. See its page.
  • Your screen was locked. It shows when you unlock.
  • The driver was installed while you were signed in. It asks at your next sign-in.

A graphics card was turned off#

The good driver didn't bring it back, so the guard turned it off, and Windows shows the screen on its Basic Display driver. The page says why. Install a driver from the card's maker, then turn the card back on in Device Manager (right-click it, Enable device), or turn the guard off on its page.

It says "The guard needs updating to this version"#

The Lamplighter updated, and the guard is running the earlier scripts. Press Update the guard (asks for administrator), and choose Yes.

It asks me to restart#

A rollback needs a restart to finish. Restart when you're ready; if you sign out instead, the guard restarts once everyone has.

The kept drivers take a lot of space#

Each graphics driver is large, and 3 are kept for each card: one to two gigabytes. That's the price of a way back.

Its page won't open#

Its page is http://lamplighter.localhost:19696/. Open on its card in Castellan starts it if it's down, and Castellan checks every two minutes that it answers, and opens it again if it has stopped. The guard runs on its own, whether the page is open or not.
