Written for Shepherd 0.2.20. Shepherd is at 0.2.21 now (1 small release since: what changed).

It lists nothing#

  • It needs 30 minutes of rounds before it lists an app for processor or memory, and a day on battery before a drain shows.
  • Nothing is wandering. That's good news.
  • The PC slept, and a round missed gives no reading.

It lists an app you need#

Leave it running. Press Leave this one be and it's never listed again. Not every background app is a problem: the Shepherd says what each uses, so you can judge.

An app keeps coming back after you close it#

Many apps start again on their own, or from another app. If it starts with Windows, press Don't start with Windows. Otherwise, change its own settings (most have one for running in the background), or uninstall it if you don't need it.

Closing an app was refused#

The log says why:

  • It changed since it was listed: it closed, restarted, or opened a window. Press Run now, and try again.
  • It wouldn't close: tick force too, and try again. Unsaved work in it is lost.
  • It runs as an administrator, or as another user: it's listed by name only. Use Task Manager.

A startup change was refused#

  • It starts for every user: that needs an administrator. Use Task Manager's Startup apps.
  • It changed since it was listed. Press Run now, and try again.

Task Manager shows different memory#

The Shepherd counts the memory an app holds for itself. Task Manager's Memory column often shows less.

Its page won't open#

Its page is http://shepherd.localhost:20707/. Open on its card in Castellan starts it if it's down, and Castellan checks every two minutes that it answers, and opens it again if it has stopped.
