When the Porter isn't working as it should

A download isn't listed#

• It isn't a kind it watches. Arrivals are programs, installers, scripts, archives and disk images, not documents or pictures.
• It's in another folder, or deeper than one folder down. Add the folder under More folders to watch for arrivals, or raise Subfolder levels.
• It hasn't looked yet. It looks every 30 minutes. Press Run now.
• It was still downloading. A file written to in the last 15 seconds waits for the next look.
• It was there the first time the Porter looked. Everything there then is taken as known.

A file says "not checked"#

• "On a network share": the Porter doesn't open files on another machine, since that would sign in to it as you. Copy it to this PC to have it checked.
• A OneDrive file that's only online isn't opened, since that would download it. Make it available offline, and it's checked on the next look.
• A very big file: up to 16 GB is checked a look; the rest on the next.

Something I know is fine is listed#

That's the Porter doing its job: it lists everything new, not only what's bad. Acknowledge it, and it won't be listed again unless it changes.

Something comes back after I acknowledged it#

It changed: a different program behind a startup entry, a new version of a download in the same place. See When it comes back.

It says Defender couldn't be read#

Windows didn't let it read Defender's findings, or another antivirus is in its place. Every other check still runs; open that antivirus to see what it found.

There are no notes#

The line at the top of its newcomers says why:

• The local AI isn't set up: see Set up the local AI.
• "Busy: notes deferred to a later round": the local AI was busy. They come on a later look.

At most 10 notes are written a look, the most serious newcomers first. Every check and verdict works without them.

Its page won't open#

Its page is http://porter.localhost:18686/. Open on its card in Castellan starts it if it's down, and Castellan checks every two minutes that it answers, and opens it again if it has stopped.
